I owe everyone an apology for going on vacation without telling my loyal readers (both of them?).  I´m in Spain with my girlfriend and will be getting back to Iraq on July 5.  Regular blogging will resume then.  Right now we´re in Seville, another site of brutal conflict between Christians and Muslims.  Fortunately all that ended in southern Spain a few centuries ago.  What remains is some great fusion architecture.  There´s a gothic cathedral in the center of town, one of the most beautiful buildings I´ve ever seen.  The bell tower used to be the minaret of the mosque that the Christians demolished to make way for their church.  Not a heart-warming story of two faiths living together in harmony, but you can´t argue with it from an aesthetic standpoint.  This afternoon we´re heading on to Granada, where the Moors made their last stand against Ferdinand and Isabella.  The city fell to the Spanish monarchs in 1492.  Not a bad year for Ferdinand and Isabella.
